Posted on Author Categories Tags,The last time Jake Barton spent any time in Shakopee, the racetrack was called Canterbury Downs and he was called every other hour by an agent in Canada who wanted him there.
Barton left Shakopee for a weekend trip to Assiniboia Downs, wound silks meadows casino falling in love, getting married and now, 24 years later, is back in Shakopee.
The story began unfolding in 1989.
Barton spent 1 ½ months in Shakopee riding for Doug Oliver among others.
And the guy he wanted off his back became his father-in-law.
Barton In the meantime had to do some shopping after leaving Canterbury in 1989.
He brought only enough clothes for the weekend.
In the last two decades, Barton has raced throughout Canada and the Southwest, settling at Prairie Meadows for recent summers after the Phoenix meet.
He decided to try Canterbury Park after the purses were increased through the partnership with the Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Mystic Lake.
For the record, Barton did return to Canterbury two years ago to ride in a stake race.
His residence in Surprise is near a patch of state land that offers ample opportunity for bird hunting, quail and dove.
His weapon of choice is a Browning 12-guage, and it has been useful in various ways over the years.
The Bartons have two children, Jessica who is on a full ride soccer scholarship at Grand Canyon University, and Justin, a senior at Willow Canyon High School in Surprise.
There is one other love that Jake and Cheryl share — dancing.
Two-step, swing, you name it.
As Barton carried on a conversation Friday night, young Alex Canchari, hoping to overtake Dean Butler for the riding title this summer, stopped momentarily to discuss a race with the veteran rider.
Barton has won titles in the past in Canada but such pursuits are not part of his goals at age 46.

For the uniformed, Lori Keith, a native of England and a regular rider at Canterbury Park, won the first running of the biggest race in Canterbury Park history last year aboard Hammers Terror, owned by Terry Hamilton and trained by Michael Stidham.
Bill asked his daughter in a recent conversation whether she would ride in the race again this year.
When she informed him that the chances appeared good, he began making plans.
Good viewing, just a matter of connecting the laptop to the telly, as they say, and they saw their daughter win the biggest race of her career.
They plan on looking in again on Saturday.
Keith will ride a horse named Dorsett, owned once again by Hamilton and trained once again by Stidham.
And, get this, she is breaking from the No.

Lining up in the No.
He is owned by Peggy Hopwood and trained by Dan McFarlane.
Officer Alex drew the outside post.

The Oaks at a mile on the turf has been run in some form, fashion or name since 1985 and was won in 2012 by Soonerette, ridden by riding champion Tanner Riggs for Donnie Von Hemel.
He had a bullet work in late June and is trained by Mike Maker who has made a habit of winning big races at Canterbury.
Aft, trained by Michael Lauer, broke his maiden last time out in Indiana.
Lauer tried to run Aft on the lead his first out and finished second.
He ran him off the pace in his second start with improved results.
My Corinthian has hit the board three times in three career starts and was the first of the shippers to arrive, stabling here on Monday.
He is trained by Dane Kobiskie.
He is 1-1-1 from three career starts and is 1-1-0 from two outs on the grass.
Mike Biehler will saddle A P Is Loose, who ran third in his first start, at Canterbury on July 11.

Until about three years ago, you commit no wagering requirements casino sorry have seen Francisco Bravo on this big, handsome Appaloosa in the morning leaving the barn, or in the afternoon after leaving the paddock, stopped in the covered area leading to the track at the north end of the grandstand, next to a rail where kids stroked his big head and offered him treats.
Lynn Hovda, the chief veterinarian at Canterbury, tried to buy him more than once.
Others tried to buy him, too.
Bravo rode Spot every morning and every afternoon, ponying horses to or from the track.
His daughter, Natalie, rode him, too.
By the end of the first day I could pony a horse with him.
Shortly thereafter, Bravo told his father-in-law that he was looking for a new horse for his daughter.
Spot was perfect for Natalie and he became hers about six years ago.
Natalie, 21, has some learning disabilities and is deaf.
She works in the cafeteria at the school for the deaf where she graduated in Sulphur, Okla.
He had suffered a stroke while riding and lost the use of one side.
His wish thereafter was to find a trustworthy horse, one with a good disposition.

Posted on Author Categories Tags, Alex Canchari was searching for ice in the jockeys room after the second half of the co-feature Wednesday night.
Yes, indeed, wait a minute.
The hottest rider on the grounds was wiping perspiration from his forehead and looking for ice to stuff in his helmet.
Three years ago, Canchari was selling tacos in the Cantina at Canterbury Park, having grown up in Shakopee, the son of Luis Canchari, who rode at Canterbury in the late 1980s.
Canchari capped off his sterling afternoon and early evening on Ghost Dance, a six-year-old gray gelding who won two grass races late in the meet last summer, both allowance events.
Correction: an earlier version of this blog referred to the final time as a track record.
In fact, Aroney had previously broken the track record for the distance at the meet running 1:40.
A crowd of 15,168 was on hand for the annual card that concludes with fireworks.
Both were run on the grass.
Distance was not the issue afterward for Scherbenske.
It was a question of surface.
Canchari, the Minnesota kid, heartily agreed after she split horses at the sixteenth pole to finish a head in front of Happy Hour Honey and another neck in front of Talkin Bout, with a time of 1:42.
Smith had gotten on the horse, BF Farm Boy, a few days ago and liked what was beneath him during a morning work.
BF Farm Boy, breaking from the No.
Then BF Farm Boy got his feet back beneath him and ran down the leader to win in a hand-time 21:83.
Owned by Wade Siegel and Don Boyle and trained by William S Harris, BF Farm Boy recorded the sixth win of his 30-race career.
Cody Smith brought in Painted Silks meadows casino for fourth.
DERBY WINNER STOPS AT CANTERBURY Turn back to the first Saturday in May, 2009 and a winner named Mine That Bird, who arrived at Churchill Downs under the most unceremonious of conditions, having traveled 1,700 miles from New Mexico in a trailer attached to a pickup truck.
Woolley has been running a stable at Prairie Meadows the last three summers and likes to fish in his spare time.
He likes to pursue the wily carp with bow and arrow.
On a recent outing he had finished for the day and was heading back.
The heavy rains this year have increased water levels in many places, including the Des Moines River.
Woolley paid a brief visit to Canterbury in the 1980s, but is truly impressed with the facility this time around.
This blog was written by Canterbury Staff Writer Jim Wells.
He built a small win streak in Minnesota by taking an older cast for a walk in an off-the-turf optional claimer, but will not see a similar pace scenario Saturday night.
Glenn Corbett takes this mount back as Ry will ride Stormdriver for his father, a contender for a piece with his set of races in New Mexico.
Kale will have to revert to his stalking tactics with Manando in the field, but they served him just fine in breaking his maiden and non-2 condition.
Manando should be heavily favored in here off his third in the Grade 3 Affirmed at Hollywood, but this horse is often used as a rabbit for his stablemates and has only come up with victories against allowance types thus far in his career.
Our Double Play was making his first appearance around two turns in the Prairie Mile and should not be far behind, and same goes for Betweenhereandcool.
The latter was stuck racing behind two huge longshots in his most recent start but showed good tenacity in staying on despite being boxed and drawing off at the end.
He was switching leads in deep stretch but paid a little more attention when tapped a couple of times with the whip.
The runner-up from the Prairie Mile, he looked like he was going to sail right by Our Double Play around the turn.
ODP was allowed to slow down each fraction as he ran though, and had something left for the drive.
That may not be the case come Saturday and with that breather gone from his arsenal Bashaar could sustain that rally past them all.
Iowa Oaks Of course the headliner in the Oaks is California import Fiftyshadesofhay, but will the outside post significantly hamper the daughter of Pulpit?
Two of her three wins have come basically wire to wire and the Black Eyed Susan score was the first displaying any real sort of closing ability.
The west coast fillies have been beating each other up behind Beholder for the most part too — so could anyone make an impact from elsewhere?
The latter is a contender but is a little dependent on pace.
Is she the same filly she used to be?
SG seems to be to be one of those sorts that comes to hand so early that when the rest catch up she comes back to earth.
So Many Ways will probably get overbet as well but could find herself a little tired at the head of the stretch.
This blog was written by Link Paddock Analyst Angela Hermann.
Angela Hermann serves as the Track Analyst for Hawthorne Racecourse in Cicero, Illinois and the summer of 2013 marks her third year in a similar capacity at Canterbury Park.
The meet includes a long list of unrestricted stakes races, and has attracted some of the best horses in the country; among them, a few notable Canterbury connections.
Prairie Meadows was the home track of champion aged mare Spit Curl Diva winner of multiple graded stakes across the country in her career, including the 2010 Grade 1 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship at the Fair Grounds, the 2010 Grade 1 Refrigerator at Lone Star Park, and the Grade 3 Keokuk Stakes at Prairie Meadows last year, in which Canterbury perennial Six It Up finished third.
Six It Up is in her fourth year at Canterbury and most recently appeared in the Cash Caravan Stakes on August 12th, in which she lost by a nose to Streak N Hot.
One of the best older horses in training last year, Jess A Runner, raced at Canterbury before continuing his campaign in Iowa.
Jess A Runner, five years old at the time, shipped in for the Great Lakes Stakes, an event for older horses at 440 yards.
Jess a Silks meadows casino not only won, he broke the track record at that distance by nearly a second.
Jess A Runner moved to Iowa after that win, where he won the Grade 3 Two Rivers Stakes and settled into the top ten poll of older horses for months to come.
One Famous Hero was the near even-money favorite heading into the final, but he finished fifth.
Cruzin the Wagon defeated the field by an entire length in 17.
Cruzin ct casino bowling alley Wagon was even more impressive at Remington Park this year, winning three of her four starts, including the Grade 3 Jack Brooks Stakes, where she set a track record for 350 yards despite a sloppy surface.
Another familiar name appeared in the Valley Junction: Huckleberry Mojito.
Huckleberry Mojito finished third in her trial and entered the final as the tenth fastest qualifier.
She had never been worse than third in her four previous starts, but the Feature Mr Jess filly improved substantially as a three-year-old after her disappointing performance in the Valley Junction, and returned as one of the best horses of the 2012 Canterbury meet.
Huckleberry is three for three here, including a three-length derby trial victory, a two-length win in the Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby, and a win against older fillies and mares in the Race for Hope Bonus Challenge.
The Bonus Challenge was a race open to horses enrolled in the AQHA Bank of America Challenge program.
Challenge-nominated horses are eligible to compete in a variety of restricted races across the country, and winners of regional races gather at the end of the year in the Challenge Championship.
This year, Prairie Meadows is hosting the final event on Oct 27th.
They are also hosting a full set of regional qualifiers, offering local horses the perfect opportunity to qualify for the final event.
Huckleberry Mojito is nominated to this program, and it is a possibility that she will show up for one of these qualifying events to have a chance to run in the final.
The only question is, which one?
As a three-year-old filly, she has her choice of the Adequan Derby, the Merial Distaff, or even the Bank of America Challenge for three-year-olds and up.
If Huckleberry Mojito continues to improve, one may be able to draw parallels between her and the great Spit Curl Diva.
Both based in the Midwest, the two fillies developed later in their career, dominated stakes races against older horses and open company and have set track records.
Spit Curl Diva earned a berth in the Merial Distaff Challenge final by winning a regional qualifier at Arapahoe; she returned the following year to qualify for the Bank of America challenge final and later that year, appeared in the Grade jamie casino true story Champion of Champions.
It is impossible to predict the future, and if possible, even harder to predict the future in horse racing, but Huckleberry Mojito has the breeding, talent, and connections to make a name for herself on the national scene.
When she does, you can say that you knew her way back when she raced at Canterbury.
In the read article, follow her and the rest of the pack to Iowa for two months of quality quarter horse racing, and save the date for the Challenge Championships on Oct 27th.
Well-taken pictures can tell us who won and source what cost, who lost and its expense.
They can capture all that needs be go here about an event.
Well-taken pictures are worth a thousand words and often more.
They preserve the past and sometimes predict the future… if only the latter were true at the racetrack!
You might have noticed that the photography at Canterbury Park has taken on a different, distinctive and even artistic quality this summer.
You might have noticed that the colors are brighter, the angles more revealing and even the shading sometimes evocative.
The horses come to life, preserved for future generations in a compelling pose or restive moment.
The jockeys are by turns happy, even gleeful, irritated, even angry, reflective, even expressionless.
Say hello to Shawn Coady, one of several members of a family born with spare film in their pockets, several lenses in their knapsacks and a love for picture-taking as it was intended.
Grandpa Jack, a transplanted Phoenician from Chicago, started out snapping pictures for the Arizona Republic in the late 1950s or early 1960s.
Welcome to picture-taking in the equine world and the start of a family industry covering tracks across the nation.
Shawn, his younger brothers Kevin and Kurtis, their father, Jeff, and their uncle, Jack, Jr.
It started many years ago when Jeff and Jack, Sr.
Shawn and his brothers were born there.
Shawn, 37, was maybe 14 years of age when the Coadys returned to Phoenix, around 1988 as he recalls.
His boyhood home and the school he attended, Thunderbird High School, were not much more than a mile from Turf Paradise.
His father had a home with horse property on Greenway Ave.
Coady is unable to point to anything specific his grandfather told him about picture-taking, but it is very likely nothing needed to be said.
For several years Coady handled the photography at Turf Paradise during the eight-month autumn-winter meet there and then headed to Yavapai Down in Prescott, a meet corresponding roughly to the one in Shakopee.
I knew Doug Oliver had been here.
Originally, Virginia was on his calendar.
That covers some territory.
Jeff, who is mostly at Oaklawn, is www hollywood casino indiana at Colonial Park.
Kurtis is at Calder.
